Welcome to Musings of a Money Manager

Markets, read through momentum and discipline — with the names that pass my screens each week.

I’m John Rothe, CMT — Founder and Chief Investment Officer of ARTAIS Capital Management, an independent Registered Investment Adviser I launched in 2006 after a decade on Wall Street with Morgan Stanley and Oppenheimer.

For roughly three decades, I’ve worked with individual and institutional investors, using tactical, adaptive strategies — and I personally manage every portfolio at ARTAIS Capital.

Musings of a Money Manager is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

As a Chartered Market Technician (CMT), my focus is on what the market is actually doing, not what it “should” be doing.

My commentary has appeared over the years in Forbes, CNBC, Reuters, U.S. News, InvestmentNews, Financial Planning Magazine, and on the Wall Street Business Network.

I’m also an active member of the National Association of Active Investment Managers (NAAIM) and the CMT Association.

This newsletter is where I share how I’m reading the markets each week.

For paid subscribers, that includes the specific names currently passing my screens.

What you’ll get

Free — the 30,000-foot view

Every Thursday, a research note on the bigger picture: the economic data I’m watching, the events that matter, and the catalysts I think could move markets next. Free and paid subscribers both receive this note.

Paid — the full picture, plus the names

Every Tuesday, paid subscribers receive Signal & Noise, my weekly research report. Each issue covers:

Rotation & momentum — where strength and weakness are showing up across the market.

The big-picture charts — the major themes shaping markets and the economy, and whether each trend looks like it’s just beginning or starting to roll over.

The ARTAIS Universe — the stocks currently passing my momentum and technical screens.

In short: free readers get my read on the “why” behind the market. Paid readers get that plus the “what” — the specific names on my screen each Tuesday.

Why upgrade?

The weekly list of stocks passing my momentum and technical screens is available only to paid subscribers.

It reflects the same screening discipline I apply in my own process, delivered to your inbox every Tuesday — so you can see what’s rising to the top of the work each week, not just read about it afterward.

The ARTAIS Framework

After decades in real market conditions, I built the ARTAIS Framework: a structured, rules-based approach to managing a portfolio. Three principles guide it.

1. Participate in strength. Momentum and relative strength help identify where market leadership is emerging.

2. Step back as risk rises. Risk isn’t constant, so the process is designed to adapt as conditions change.

3. Take emotion out of it. A disciplined, rules-based process aims to keep decisions aligned with the market rather than reacting to headlines.

No framework can remove risk or guarantee a profit. What a consistent process can do is help you make decisions with intention rather than emotion.

New here? Start with the 4-minute overview

If you’re new to ARTAIS, this short video explains how the adaptive methodology works and how it approaches market uncertainty:

Looking ahead

Markets evolve. Leadership rotates. Risk never stands still. What doesn’t change is the need for strategy, discipline, and adaptability.

Whether you’re here to learn, test new ideas, or understand how adaptive investing works, I’m glad you’re here.

Thank you for joining me.
