About John Rothe
Welcome to the Substack of John Rothe CMT, Portfolio Manager and Founder of ARTAIS Capital Management. This publication exists for a simple purpose: to help investors gain clarity, confidence, and risk awareness in a market environment that changes faster and more dramatically than traditional investment strategies were designed for.
With nearly 30 years of professional portfolio management experience, I’ve managed money through bull markets, bear markets, periods of extreme volatility, and structural shifts that challenged long-held Wall Street assumptions. Over those decades, I’ve learned what works, what doesn’t, and—most importantly—what actually helps investors protect what they’ve built.
That philosophy led to the creation of ARTAIS, which stands for:
Absolute Returns Through Adaptive Investment Strategies.
It’s more than a name—it’s the framework that guides how I manage portfolios and how I think about risk, opportunity, and long-term investor success.
Why This Substack Exists
Most investors approaching or in retirement want the same thing:
to protect their wealth and stay aligned with opportunity.
Yet many rely on strategies built for a different era—static allocations, broad diversification, or “stay the course” guidance that often leaves portfolios exposed at the wrong time.
This Substack is designed to give you clear, objective insights into:
How markets evolve and why leadership rotates
How momentum and relative strength help identify opportunity
How risk truly behaves during major market disruptions
How adaptive, rules-based strategies can help investors avoid avoidable losses
What long-term investors should pay attention to (and what they should ignore)
If your goal is to make sense of the market and invest with a greater sense of calm and clarity, this publication is for you.
About John Rothe
I began my investment career on Wall Street, working with U.S.-based clients at Morgan Stanley and Oppenheimer. In 2006, I founded what is now ARTAIS Capital Management to bring a more adaptive, disciplined approach to portfolio management—one built around data, momentum, relative strength, and structured risk controls.
Over the years, my work and commentary have appeared in:
CNBC
Forbes
Reuters
US News & World Report
InvestmentNews
Financial Planning Magazine
National radio broadcasts on the Wall Street Business Network
My goal has always been the same: to help investors understand the market through a lens grounded in experience, not speculation.
What Is the ARTAIS Framework?
After decades of navigating real market environments, I developed the ARTAIS Framework as a structured, rules-based approach to portfolio management. It is built on three core principles:
1. Participate in areas of market strength
Momentum and relative strength help identify where leadership is emerging.
2. Reduce exposure when risks rise
Risk is not constant—our approach adapts to evolving conditions.
3. Remove emotion from decision-making
A disciplined process helps investors stay aligned with the market rather than reacting to it.
This framework is designed for investors who want thoughtful risk management and a strategy built for today’s markets.
